Grading of nutmeg

Grading of nutmeg

For hundreds of years selecting and grading nutmeg in Indonesia was done in the same way. A small change appeared during the eighties when Japanese customers preferred the so-called sinking nutmegs.

Since a few years a new method was implemented in the way nutmeg can be graded. The selection of nutmegs is still done by hand, but broken, cracked or halved nutmegs can now be sorted under UV-light as well. This quality is named BLS (Black Light Selected) by us. BLS nutmeg has lower mould residues and significantly reduces the risk on mycotoxines. Together with HPLC testing of the sub lots BLS nutmeg can be guaranteed within the required levels.
