Now the west has celebrated their new year, we can start looking forward to Chinese lunar new year. The new year in China will be the year of the Ox.

Oxen are known for diligence, dependability, strength and determination. It seems to be just the Zodiac sign we need after 2020, no need to explain any further…

But will the year of the Ox turn out to be bullish as well? Looking at the king of spices, pepper, it might turn out to be so. Fundamentally crop expectations are lower in the main producing countries. Already in the last quarter of the previous year we have seen a correction upwards. Next to this freight rates are foreseen to remain high at least during the first quarter of 2021. Signs are there that pepper is starting to regain its famous nick name again of being the black gold of trade.
