News from Van Der Does Spice Brokers
Growing demand for spices
The global spices market is growing at an annual growth rate of about 5% (by value) and is projected to exceed $10 billion by 2020. Looking ahead, it is questionable whether supply will be able to keep up with demand. New plantings of spices and herbs might not be able to satisfy global demand and replenish low stock levels. A structural challenge is to find new farmers. Despite high prices, many young people are not interested in cultivating spices and herbs. Industry experts expect prices to remain high, or in some cases to continue to grow. The large price drops we have seen in the past are not expected to occur again in the future. Source: CBI/Eurostat

The Rainforest Alliance was the first to certify sustainable spices due to a good track record in adapting the SAN standard to new sectors. The SAN is dedicated to establishing global respect and recognition for its sustainable agricultural standards by all actors along the value chain. It would be more efficient and effective to adapt the SAN standard than it would be to develop an entirely new standard for spices. The sustainability standard will address such issues as the loss of biodiversity, the use of chemicals and pesticides, and poor labor conditions. It will eventually be applicable to the production and trade of 34 different types of culinary spices. At Van der Does we can help you source RA spices directly from the country of origin, please contact us for more information.
Van der Does Spice Brokers are pleased to announce the recent certification under the British Retail Consortium (BRC) standard for food safety. TÜV NORD INTEGRA has granted us certification according to the BRC Agents & Brokers Standard after a successful audit. With this Van der Does Spice Brokers becomes the first sole spice brokerage house to be BRC certified. BRC Global Standards is a leading safety and quality certification programme with certification issued through a worldwide network of accredited certification bodies. The standards guarantee the standardisation of quality, safety and operational criteria and ensure that manufacturers fulfil their legal obligations and provide protection for the end consumer.
Grading of nutmeg
For hundreds of years selecting and grading nutmeg in Indonesia was done in the same way. A small change appeared during the eighties when Japanese customers preferred the so-called sinking nutmegs. Since a few years a new method was implemented in the way nutmeg can be graded. The selection of nutmegs is still done by hand, but broken, cracked or halved nutmegs can now be sorted under UV-light as well. This quality is named BLS (Black Light Selected) by us. BLS nutmeg has lower mould residues and significantly reduces the risk on mycotoxines. Together with HPLC testing of the sub lots BLS nutmeg can be guaranteed within the required levels. For more information on Siauw/Ambon Nutmeg BLS, please do not hesitate to contact us.
