New EU Packaging Rules (PPWR)

New EU Packaging Rules (PPWR)

Impact on Bulk Spice Exports:
The European Union has introduced new packaging legislation under Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR), which will apply from August 2026.
These rules will directly impact all bulk spice shipments to the EU market.
In essence, packaging must become simpler, cleaner, and fully recyclable.

Key requirements
- All packaging must be recyclable
- Multilayer plastics will no longer be accepted
- Paper bags must not be plastic-laminated
- PE liners must be mono-material and clearly specified
- Packaging must be reduced to the minimum necessary
- Full traceability and material transparency will be required
- Paper bags combined with loose PE liners remain acceptable, provided both materials are individually recyclable and can be easily separated.

Market impact
Non-compliant packaging will increasingly lead to delays, additional costs, or rejection upon arrival in the EU.
As a result, EU buyers are already aligning their purchasing requirements accordingly.

Our approach
We actively work with our partners to ensure that packaging meets upcoming EU standards. Clear specifications and transparency in materials are becoming essential for continued access to the European market.
